The Rye Society of Arts held the private view of its new spring show on Friday April 1 at the Rye Art Gallery and as far as I am aware there was not an April fool’s joke in sight- let me know if I missed one!
The work is in a wide variety of mediums and is very varied. Local work, of course has a strong place, Rye High Street in winter was a very atmospheric representation of our town. Dungeness with one of the lighthouses titled Beam in ink and Acrylic, appearing as an almost pornographic image. Waves with a beached boat, pencil on paper is a fascinating piece by Karen Birchwood. In an adjoining exhibition of other local artists Camber beach featured with cantering horses in a monoprint by Amanda Averillo.
Ceramic pieces, a decorative platter, strongly representing Dungeness in all its heightened glory is ‘Denge wonder’ by Sarah Palmer.
And there is much else as well displaying impressive talent and artistic ingenuity. Do go and have a look – whether to buy or just to browse, your time will be well spent. The show runs until May 8 and the Gallery is open from 10:30am until 5:30pm
