It amazes me time and time again just how much entertainment and variety Rye offers. There was much laughter and delight on Sunday morning amongst families and friends waiting outside the Ship Inn for the wheelbarrows to arrive with the runners fighting for first place in the Scallop Race
Having braved the cold for a while my friends and I thought we deserved a good breakfast and went to the Strand Quay Cafe, also known as the bikers’ cafe, due to its popularity with two-wheeled visitors. The food, whether it be just scrambled eggs on toast or full English, (bacon, eggs, sausages, tomatoes, beans) is wholesome, reasonably priced and doesn’t involve too much waiting time and there is a great atmosphere.
In the afternoon some of us headed to the King’s Head, on Rye hill, where we enjoyed local talent in lively surroundings, with blues and old favourites. The organizer Steve Stone was on guitar, the brilliant Phil Law on piano and Phil Trainer also on guitar. Reg Marchant joined later on the mandolin. It was a lovely (and free!) end to the scallop festival.
