The sound of the Champs-Élysées

The Rye Arts Festival may be a few months away, but every now and again there’s a pre-festival treat – like the one for jazz lovers last weekend.

“Afternoon in Paris” featured Mike Hatchard at Rye Community Centre on Friday May 17. It promised a gypsy jazz and hot club style performance, and delivered on its promise.

Mike Hatchard (keyboard, vocals and violin), Susanna Warren (clarinet, bass
clarinet, vocals and melodica), Jeremy Young (guitar) and Paul Stacey (Bass), took
us on a journey beyond Django Reinhardt’s Paris, to South America, Germany and
Wales (Susanna sang in French, German and Welsh).

The music was fabulous. The obvious enjoyment of the performers and their various
stories added to the evening’s entertainment.

Well done Rye Arts Festival.
