Five young artists took part in an exciting print workshop for 8-13 year-olds at the Rye Art Gallery on Saturday June 8.

Alanda Marchant who ran the workshop was really pleased with the results. “Thank you to our budding young artists, Audrey, William, Mary, Harry and Robyn for coming along to the Rye Art Gallery. They had the opportunity to learn and experiment with different print-making techniques in a fun, engaging environment and were guided through the fundamentals of various printmaking styles, including monoprint, cyanotype, and woodblock printing. The children said that it was a fun workshop and that they enjoyed experimenting and seeing their different results.”

Cyanotype prints are made on paper or fabric that have been coated in a light sensitive emulsion. Stencils, leaves, feathers, photographic negatives or other objects are put on the surface to block the light and the paper is then exposed to sunlight. Once exposed, the solution is washed off the paper to fix the image. The exposed areas turn blue and the parts covered by the objects stay white.

A monoprint can be made in two ways. An image is made from a smooth surface or plate which is coated in printing ink and a design drawn directly on the inked surface. Paper is then laid on the ink to pick up the design. Alternatively paper is placed on the inked surface and drawn on so transferring the ink onto the paper to create the image.

The oldest form of printmaking, woodcut is a relief process in which knives and other tools are used to carve a design into the surface of a wooden block. The raised areas that remain after the block has been cut are inked and printed, while the recessed areas that are cut away do not retain ink, and will remain blank in the final print.
