The last weekend of the 53rd annual Rye Arts Festival is serving up a mix of events.
Take music, the British singer / songwriter and guitarist Steve Tilston is playing Rye Community Centre on Friday September 27. Steve was played by Al Pacino in a Hollywood movie Danny Collins, which was based on a long lost letter written by John Lennon to a youthful Tilston telling him to never give up in his artistic endeavours!
On Saturday Americana will be the order of the day at Rye Community Centre, as Ben Bedford, also a singer / songwriter and guitarist of note, makes a return to Rye. Ben hails from Springfield, but the Springfield in Illinois which was Abraham Lincoln’s hometown rather than the one in Ohio that Trump thinks people are eating the pets!
Before Ben takes the stage there are other fascinating events on Saturday, with Isabel Ryan getting the ball rolling at 11am in the Tudor Room at the Mermaid, where she will talk about her life working for a French architect in New York in the early eighties, including working on the restoration of the flame on the Statue of the Statue of Liberty.
In the same venue at 3pm David Burville will be talking about his career in the world of organs, from church organs to fairground dance organs. David will also give us the inside on his recent work as the organ restoring expert on BBC TV’s hit show The Repair Shop.
And then at 5:30pm Rye Players will be offering a Festival treat with their play Holmes Under the Hammer, which has been written by Oliver Brooks. The action, which features Sherlock Holmes solving a new case, is likely to be a riot, as Rye Players continue to up their game! It’s going to be a whole lot of fun and not to be missed.
Finally, fans of Derek Jarman might like to go to the Kino on Sunday September 29 where there will be a screening of Caravaggio, which is perhaps his most accessible film.
