A temporary inconvenience

With the summer season now at an end and with the influx of seasonal visitors dwindling, what better time to improve the infrastructure at Camber Sands and invest in the future for this hugely important tourist destination which at its peak, attracts up to 25,000 visitors each day. These much needed improvements are such positive news for Camber, where some businesses this year have had a tough time, and once completed the new welcome centre will help to shape Camber’s future.

Rother District Council often gets accused of sitting on their hands but not in this case as a chain reaction inviting tenders to rebuild the public toilets at Camber Sands central car park has resulted in the tender being awarded to Baxall as the main contractor who, flush with success at securing the contract on behalf of RDC, have now started work on the project.

The existing building is about to be remodelled to include additional toilet facilities, a welcome centre, commercial kiosk and storage facilities for the RNLI as previously reported Welcome Centre coming to Camber

Baxall were successfully appointed after a two-stage procurement process that reviewed a very high-quality level of responses to the tender submission. Baxall have completed notable buildings locally and have a proven track record having been the main contractors for the Rye Harbour Discovery Centre.
Secure site fencing encloses the contractor’s temporary compound and unfortunately for those hoping to use the facilities they will have to go elsewhere as the toilets are out of action until the Spring of next year when the new block of facilities and welcome centre is due to open on April 25, 2025.

We will lift the lid on any further news as the development progresses and if all goes to plan it will become an added bonus and much needed additional facility for the local community, open in readiness for the influx of tourists and extra visitors heading to Camber Sands for the next summer season.
