Another chimney fire

A fire appliance was obstructed earlier in Market Street

Fire services were called to a chimney fire in Watchbell Street early Monday morning March 23. Dan Channon, Rye fire station manager, said afterwards that on a precautionary call-back later in the morning a hot spot was still present in the chimney, needing further attention.

Another chimney fire recently occurred nearby in Church Square. On that occasion, the fire appliance was obstructed from close attendance by a badly parked vehicle, not for the first time.

On Monday however, the way was clear, perhaps because, coincidentally, with the threatened spread of the coronavirus, there has been a noticeable decrease during the last week in the amount of vehicle traffic seeking parking places on or off pavements in the citadel – the historic centre of Rye.
