Bonfire’s April update

Since the lockdown, all directors of the Rye Bonfire Society and the company secretary have kept in contact, and with other officers of the society where appropriate.

In the light of the latest government bulletin that the lockdown is further extended to at least May 7, and potentially beyond, it has become obvious that our scheduled monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 13, should be cancelled and our Auction of Promises scheduled for Thursday, May 14, should be postponed.

However, the Summer bonfire quiz on Wednesday, August 5, remains booked with Judith and her team at the Mermaid as usual, and we hope that we shall be able to go ahead with this – so make sure it’s in your diaries.

On a happier note, as previously informed, our stalwart member Brian Gasson (Mr Sound and Light) who sustained injuries from an unprovoked attack in Hastings is recovering slowly, but in good spirits, he tells us. We all wish him well, we need him!

Those of our members who were at our last meeting, the AGM, will recall that we were anxious to get a working party together to reinstate the Salts as we had nothing but rain and storms since November.

The first window in the weather came along during the first phase of the lockdown which stopped us getting together our usual working party. However, Tony Heritage went solo and harrowed, seeded and even mowed the Salts and deserves a round of applause.

Many thanks are due to Rother District Council Parks and Gardens department for their patience over the reinstatement of the Salts.

We hope that all our members are able to keep safe and well, and please be assured that the directors and officers of the society will constantly review the bonfire programme going forward in the light of any restrictions that may be imposed upon us.
