Phil Wheeler of Tibbs Farm explains, “A couple of weeks ago we attended the annual Institute of Brewing & Distilling hop awards at Renegade Brewery and were thrilled to win the High Alpha Acid category for a sample of our Admiral hops. Samples from across the country were judged by a panel of top brewers and our Admiral variety came out number one.
“High alpha acids are generally what you’re looking for when brewing lagers: it is less about the flavour that the hops bring and more about their bittering quality. So, if you’re after an English hopped lager our Admiral could be just what you’re after.
“My brother Simon deals with much of the work that goes into the hops so it’s great to be able to see those efforts being rewarded at a national level. Well done: we are proud of his achievements. Congratulations to all the other category winners and especially to those growers from our grower-owned co-operative @ehl.”
Tibbs Farm has the most wonderful views across the valley and a great café serving truly scrumptious food. On Sunday, February 25 it is holding a guided tour of the hops with a talk and a chance to see how it all works. It is free, so just turn up before 11am with clean shoes. This is vital as farmers do not want contamination from other soils to enter their fields.
