After months of speculation and in among the doom and gloom we are all trudging through, it appears the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned back on.
Thanks must go to Francesca Daly who spotted and forwarded the photo above, posted online by the George in Rye, who confirm that at long last, the George Hotel is re-opening and a firm date of May 1 has now been set and advertised.
All the guesswork and rumour-mongering can stop and we look forward to seeing this hugely important business and very popular venue opening its doors once more.
Congratulations to the owners, Alex and Katie Clarke and also to the huge team of professionals involved for getting this mammoth project to the winning post. It has without doubt been a very complex and detailed undertaking to rebuild this historic building and I imagine it has also been a logistical nightmare, coping not only with the complexities of the build and building itself, but coping with all the extra pressures brought about by its location on the high street in such an ancient town.
There will be a sigh of relief when May finally arrives, we need some good news at the moment and Rye businesses will be delighted to see the hotel back in business and reverse the knock-on effect that the devastating fire has had on so many people.

Fantastic News. Can’t wait for the opening. Congratulations to all involved.
Is this still locally owned and run? On Google it appears to be part of an international group called Workham Hotels!
Workham Hotels is merely a representation agency promoting independently owned hotels, which you’d have seen if you’d actually read the pages that came up on your google search.
The George is still under the same ownership it was before: the names of the owners are mentioned in the article above, and those of us who actually live in Rye know them.
Great news that it’s re-opening soon. All reports suggest it will be even better than before.
It is owned and operated by a local company. The apparent international connection per google is either wrong or very out of date!
Great news that our only 5 star hotel in the town will be back up and running soon, after the fire, a great asset to the town not just for the tourists, but locals alike.
It was a splendid 4-Star hotel. Never been a 5-Star hotel in Rye… yet!
It is a brilliant fixture in the High Street, that unfortunately lets everyone down by it’s patchwork of potholes, backfill and cobbling.
It’s embarrassing.

Good luck to The George, but I would be embarrassed to be associated with an organisation that uses such flowery ‘corporate’ language!
My memories are of the hotel when it was a part of the then THF group. It didn’t spend much money on maintenance of the fabric of the building, but the bar was a great place to enjoy a Saturday night drinking session with friends!
What great news for the owners, other businesses in the town, tourists and the locals too! It makes something terrible to happen to make everyone realise how important The George is to one and all!! Wishing The George every success in the future!
Very pleased to see the return of the George! Pity about the exterior terracotta colour in a conservation area.
