Every month in Rye, a band of Royal Voluntary Service (RVS) volunteers come together to create a lunch for the local community. This enables people to meet with friends new and old to enjoy tasty food and company on a regular basis. Our lunch clubs usually provide a two course meal at affordable prices.
On Monday, December 5 at the monthly lunch there were crackers, a quiz for each table to answer and a fabulous Christmas lunch with all the trimmings. The air was festive and people had dressed up for the occasion. The volunteers in the kitchen had worked for hours to provide such a delightful feast.
Father Christmas made a flying visit on his way to the North Pole and handed everyone a box of chocolates.
Tony Brackell and Alex Smith from Wellington Lodge 341, the local Masonic Lodge, presented me with a cheque for £500 to help the RVS to carry on their wonderful work in the community. The Wellington Lodge 341 is 178 years old. This year they have provided funds for many local charities including the food bank, Pett Level Rescue and Sailability and later this month they have given twenty children tickets to go to the pantomime in Hastings.
Inge Davie proudly wore her 40-year volunteer medal to the meal as she is so pleased that she has been able to help for so long.
As co-ordinator and chef I would love to thank my happy band of volunteers who turn out every month – we are a great team. Anyone is welcome to come to the meal and enjoy the company and keep warm regardless of age. We also have a monthly tea club, details of both are in fixtures.
