A balmy evening for Northiam’s sixth Bonfire Celebration this year was particularly welcome after Storm Brian battered the site last year (but the show went on!).
Spectators enjoyed a short procession with some interesting costumes from societies from as far away as Lewes, as well as a good contingent from Rye, Ewhurst and Staplecross and Robertsbridge Bonfire Societies, who also provided marshals to help with the road closures. Northiam will be reciprocating at their events.
Everyone enjoyed Ryebellion Drummers and Scorcher, Rye’s fire-breathing dragon rounding up the marchers.
The guy competition in the lead-up to the bonfire was great fun with competitors popping up all over the village. Moloney & Partners gave prizes for the winning three guys, and most of them were then transported to the bonfire site to be added to the fire. Around 3,500 visitors on the bonfire field ensured a great atmosphere with two bars (with special Bonfire Brew and Boadicea from Rother Valley Brewery), refreshments, kids’ entertainment, and live music from the Elastic Band.
After committing the guys to the fiery furnace, everyone thrilled to the spectacular firework display.
There’s no rest for a Bonfire Society – fundraising for next year starts now, with a Craft Fayre on December 1 and a Quiz Night on December 8. Keep up to date by checking the website – northiambonfiresociety.co.uk
