At 2pm on Sunday, September 6 in front of Rye Town Hall in the presence of the mayor, deputy mayor and a few onlookers, town crier Paul Goring gave a cry to celebrate the accession of Rebekah Gilbert to the mayoralty:
Be it known by all persons here present that the Antient Town of Rye has appointed a new mayor.
At a full meeting of the town council held on Monday the 24th day of August in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty, Councillor Rebekah Gilbert was unanimously elected to the 731 year old office of Mayor of Rye and, ex officio, to the equally ancient role of Speaker of the Confederation of the Cinque Ports.
Henceforth she shall be known as The Right Worshipful, The Mayor of Rye and Speaker of the Cinque Ports, Councillor Rebekah Gilbert.
At the same meeting, Councillor Andi Rivett was elected to the office of Deputy Mayor of Rye, and is also the Mayor’s Consort.
The traditional mayor making ceremony cannot be held this year, however we pay tribute to the outstanding work and service of the outgoing mayor, Councillor Michael Boyd, and wish the new mayor and her deputy every success in the duties ahead of them.
May God bless Old England and the Antient Town of Rye and may God Save The Queen!

Congratulations to our new mayor.
Is there anyone who can tell me how many candidates there were.
Thanks
Congrataltions, Mayor!
