Tammy King has just been at RNLI at Rye Harbour for a year now and has taken on the rôle of launching authority (LA). This is the first time the station has had a female LA which is brilliant for the station.
Tammy, when did you join the RNLI at Rye Harbour?
I started in November last year.
What motivated you to join the crew?
My kids are getting older and I wanted to do something outside of home and work, I’ve thought about it for some time but didn’t think I would be of any help as I get sea-sick. At my boy’s football match after Tia and Emma told me I could be shore crew, I went to the boathouse and the rest is history.
You have just become the first female launching authority ( LA) at the station, how does that feel?
It feels good and to see so many women at Rye RNLI: that just highlights what an inclusive vibe the station has. Everyone there helps each other out and works together.
What have you gained from being part of the crew?
New friends and knowledge. I have not got a sailing past and knew nothing about the water so it’s all a learning curve and it’s good for my kids to see volunteering brings good things.
What challenges do you think the new rôle will bring?
I’ve got a lot to learn and, more to the point, retain but it’s slowly sinking in. I’ve recently changed my job, so it’s a double learning whammy at the moment. I work at Dungeness Power Station now as an emergency preparedness officer.
Tell me a little about yourself. Where did you grow up?
I grew up in a little village in Essex called Bradwell-on-Sea.
Did you enjoy school?
I did enjoy school, and when I left I attended Southend College of Art and Design.
What are your strengths?
I am motivated, passionate and determined.
What three words describe you?
I’m outgoing, love a challenge and can be overly chatty.
