In light of the government’s new Covid-19 restrictions, introduced on January 6, February’s copy of Fixtures will not be dropped through your door this week. Fixtures  returns online for this month and can be downloaded in full here or from Adams’ website.

The last time Fixtures suspended hard copy production and went online was the occasion of the first lockdown in April 2020, as reported in Rye News. It returned to hard copy in August 2020 and is now in its 79th year of publication.

Ian Foster of Adams explained that apart from the lockdown regulations which prohibit non-essential journeys, there is also the need to protect the safety of his distribution staff, many of whom are elderly. Adams employs 24 people to hand-deliver Fixtures, including the driver who makes drops of 7,000 copies each month to Rye, Camber, Iden, Peasmarsh, Wittersham and Icklesham.

This month’s Fixtures still includes useful information and contact details for services in Rye and surrounding villages as well as a relatively new “On this day” section that replaces the previous events listing. It contains the new bus time tables and the usual advertisements, which are free of charge for the online version.

Did you know, for example, that on Friday, February 5 1958 parking meters first appeared on the streets of London’s Mayfair. The meters were first used in America in 1935 – and finally arrived in Rye in 2019!
