Four days of celebrations

Last weekend’s coronation of King Charles III saw four days of celebration involving both the very young and older residents, with Rye being actually represented in Westminster Abbey and a local “official” ceremony later the same day, along with “Big” events ranging from Winchelsea’s very Big Lunch on Sunday to Monday’s “Big Help Out” in Tilling Green.

This week’s Rye News therefore has an extra section labelled Coronation 2023 to include the stories gathered in so far, but more stories about events, actions and memories of the coronation are welcome – if you can drag yourself away from the Eurovision Song Contest.

Historically the Cinque Ports Barons have been represented at coronations because they represented the monarchy’s sea power. Rye’s mayor was there, to give readers a personal account, in his seat at 8am for Saturday’s two-hour service starting at 11am .

Meanwhile back in Rye in the afternoon Ryebellion Drummers and the town criers summoned the public to watch how Rye celebrates coronation in style including a video readers can watch.

Some however could not wait for the coronation to happen and “Children celebrate in radiant royal style” reports how one primary school’s children showed off their red, white and blue outfits, while “Coronation celebrated in a unique way” shows what can be done with postbox toppers – you may see some around Pett.

Not everything went to plan though and “Coronation damp squib” explains how a big green wall can end up in a coal hole.

Other celebrations did go to plan as “Winchelsea’s very Big Lunch” on Sunday proved, as it grew and grew. Not to be outdone, community volunteers were hard at work in Tilling Green on Monday with “The Big Help Out“.

If you have stories and memories from the coronation long weekend, Rye News will be glad to get them for publication, space permitting.
