Rye 1sts travelled to play Glynde 1sts on Saturday June 1 seeking to sustain their 100% start to their Sussex League Division 3 East campaign. Rye won the toss and inserted Glynde on a green-looking wicket. Rye made the perfect start as Shohel Ahmed took 5-30, as Glynde were reduced to 12-4. Glynde then recovered as Ollie Bailey 49 and the rest of the middle order hit back. Late on George Burton-Durham with 50 saw Glynde to a challenging 214 all out in the 45th over.

Rye’s response stuttered as Rye were reduced to 47-3. At this point Luke Payton took control of the response. With support from Will Wheeler 46, Rye recovered to 123-4 and then Luke Payton motored on to hit 114 not out, which included nine 6s and eight 4s. Rye then eased past the target with 7 overs to spare.

This Saturday June 8, Rye 1sts host Seaford 1sts at The Rye Cricket Salts in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera, as they strive for 5 wins in a row.

Whilst the 1sts were at Glynde, Rye 2nds hosted Glynde 2nds in a match sponsored by The Mermaid Inn. It was a frustrating afternoon for the 2nds. Glynde in the previous week had hit 355 runs, one of their batters scoring 155. However Rye’s bowling and fielding was pretty faultless. Glynde made headway early on but the introduction of skipper Blake Rouse 4-30 and Martin Blincow 3-21 saw Glynde tumble from 93-3 to 174 all out in 39 overs.

At tea Rye discussed how batting 40 overs would see them past the target. Sadly the batting did not match the bowling as Rye slipped to 24-4 in just 5 overs. The accurate bowling of Michael Brooks 5-27 and Wyatt Watson 2-19 sealed Rye’s fate, as they were dismissed for 89 in just 22.4 overs. Paul Hitchcott top scored with 25.

The 3rds on Saturday June 1, hosted Herstmonceux 3rds at Icklesham. The previous week Herstmonceux beat Rye by 10 wickets, so the pressure was on. Rye 3rds responded with a spirited performance with the bat. After 40 overs Rye had scored 184-183-6 with Tom O’Neill top scoring with 26, and with 4 other bats making contributions of 20 plus runs.

In reply Herstmonceux were on the front foot at 84-1. Then the breakthrough as Kendall Wells 32 and Martin Scanlan 32 were dismissed. Then tight bowling by the youngsters, Theo Burton 1-31, Charley Prentice 6 overs for 21 runs and backed up by Neil Archer 2-23. Aided by good catching and ground fielding, Herstmonceux finished 29 runs short, giving Rye 3rds quick revenge for the previous week. This Saturday June 8, Rye 3s travel to Westfield 2nds.

Last week due to half-term there were no Junior Fixtures, but next week on Monday June 10, Rye U11A travel to Wye A, whilst the B team host Mersham B. On Tuesday June 11, the U16s host Wye and on Thursday June 13, the U13s travel to Ashford Town.
