A new flexible, cheap, on-demand bus service is now available for Rye residents and those across most of Rural Rother and East Sussex.
East Sussex County Council has introduced an on-demand rideshare service for areas with limited or no bus service. Residents can book a FlexiBus journey to their nearest town, train station, hospital or other key destination, including Aldi at Ore and the Conquest hospital. All for a £2 trip. You can be collected from outside your home.
You can book FlexiBus via their app or phone number. Download the Ride Pingo App or call 01273 078203 (6:30am to 7:30 pm Monday to Saturday). You can book a FlexiBus ride up to 30 minutes before you want to travel and up to seven days in advance. You can book up to five seats per trip.
An example of this new service for Rye residents may be that young people living a long walk from Rye station could book a ride home after college or summer jobs.
This service could be an absolute game changer for people to access potential employment, schooling, health and shopping as well as supporting those who are isolated to meet friends at very reasonable cost.
Users have described the service as: “A brand new 16-seater mini-bus that arrives promptly, is clean and friendly.” You can pay your fee as you book or cash on pickup.
Rye area is Zone 10. You can read all about it at https://www.eastsussex.gov.uk/roads-transport/public/flexibus.

Brilliant initiative, Mags. Could be a great asset to many – young and old.
Sadly, Rye itself is not included in Zone 10. If you download the app, and try to book a service you will see. I commented as The Chamber on ESCC FB post when they announced and they responded to confirm. I’d like to be able to share their response but looks like it’s been removed. I hope this means they are looking into it. Rye Station and Rye Memorial Hospital are drop off points and that’s it.
I’m surprised to hear this having two separate families telling me how good it was! Arrangements to pick up and drop off on Udimore Road and Valley Park. Just last week.
