Today was the last day of Steve Moore running the fruit and vegetable stall at Rye Thursday market. He has found a buyer for the business, Peter Bradley & Son, who take over next week, Thursday October 4.

By the stall, balloons saying ‘Happy Retirement’

Steve said: “I’m sad to be leaving all the lovely people of Rye, but I’ll be leaving the business in good hands. I will be helping the new owners for a couple of weeks and I believe they’ll give people good value and quality.

“I’m looking forward to my new life on my raspberry farm in Chile with my three youngest children and my wife. I expect my older children will be coming over to visit on holiday during the winter months.”

His daughter Nowella, who has been with him on the stall for many of his 18 years of coming to Rye, is also looking forward to a new challenge. She has several different occupations lined up, so she’ll be keeping as busy as ever.

Customers at the stall gave and received a warm leave-taking, more in the nature of friendship than of commerce. Typical comments on the greeting sheet were: “We’ll miss you Steve.”
