Hamstreet resident Vicky McKissock isn’t one to let the grass grow under her feet. It was an opportunity not to be missed when premises in the village centre became vacant in November and last Friday, February 7, she announced the grand opening of her third Star Beauty School, at The Salon, Hamstreet.
Vicky has been running Star Beauty Schools for over 10 years. With premises in Hastings and Dover, Vicky envisaged the Hamstreet premises as filling the “hole in the middle”.
“We’re very much a beauty salon, we don’t do hair” she explained. “Nails, waxing, massage, facials and eye treatments” are available for ladies requiring a spruce up, whether for a special occasion or a weekly treat. But that’s merely the tip of the iceberg. “Our training and teaching programmes are the best sellers” says Vicky. Together with business partner Sarah Kirby, she offers industry recognised diplomas delivered through intensive short courses. The modular beauty diploma courses are designed to teach or supplement specific skills in different aspects of beauty treatments, some of which offer NVQ or VRQ qualifications.
“Probably 70% of our clients visit us for the workshops. And probably 80% of those pupils want to start a business” explains Vicky. “It’s a recession proof industry” she adds. “People always want their nails done, or a facial before that special occasion.”
The premises, in The Street, were formerly an antiques shop, and Vicky is convinced the new lease of life will be a success. “There’s a strong sense of community in Hamstreet and tremendous support for local business. We’ve had an excellent response to the opening, and the locals are brilliant at supporting new ventures – We know it’s going to work.”
