Preparations for parking enforcement in Rother to be transferred to East Sussex County Council have begun after formal approval from government.

Work to install new parking lines and posts in streets identified during a public consultation last year began this week, with signs and parking machines to be put in place later this summer.

Enforcement powers are expected to be officially transferred from Sussex Police in October, once the legal process is complete.

Cllr Claire Dowling, East Sussex County Council’s lead member for transport and environment, said: “We started this process after concerns were raised by Rother District Council and members of the public that limited police resources meant there was often a lack of enforcement.

“From October …. more rigorous enforcement”

“From October, we will be able to carry out more rigorous enforcement and tackle some of the problem areas across the district that are of the greatest concern to residents.

“Transferring enforcement powers from the police to the council has worked well elsewhere in the county, with civil enforcement already operating successfully in three of the five district and boroughs.”

While residents will see new parking bays, signs and machines appearing across the district, they will not come into effect until the legal process is complete.

Before civil parking enforcement (CPE) begins in the district, residents will be given details of parking arrangements, parking tariffs and how and where parking permits can be purchased. There will be a two-week grace period at the start of the CPE where warning notices will be issued to those breaching the new regulations.
