The £1 million refurbishment of St Michael’s Hospice is almost complete following the devastating arson attack, in July last year. The builders were still in evidence though as we joined a tour of the building on Tuesday August 23. Finishing touches and staff training will be completed by the time the patients move back in on September 5. It was fortunate that accommodation was found for them all at Hastings Court Nursing Home on the Ridge in Hastings.

Each of the sparkling new re-modelled bedrooms on the ground and first floor (26 now instead of 28 previously) has its own en-suite bathroom, all designed to the latest clinical standards. There is, for example, a new bariatric room for patients over 25 stone. The reception area and day centre have been upgraded and an extension to the conservatory has created a light airy space for recreation.

The range of services provided by St Michael’s is extremely comprehensive. From 24/7 palliative care, the original concept has expanded into hospice at home, allowing patients the option to receive specialist care in the comfort of their own home.

Day care services offer those with a progressive life-limiting illness a friendly environment to enjoy activities and receive special therapies. Night-sitting from 10pm until 7am is available with on-call home registered nurse support. Neighbour support with gardening and other chores is one of the many services rendered by a team of over 900 volunteers. Bereavement services and counselling are offered, the latter in association with the Sarah Lee Trust which is based at the hospice. Next year the community will celebrate the 21st birthday of the Trust and the 30th birthday of St Michael’s.

The hospice embodies holistic care for the whole person, physical and spiritual. We visited the beautiful St Augustine’s Chapel, part of the original nunnery building dating from 1913 and undamaged by the fire. That and the extensive gardens are places for peaceful reflection for patients and their visitors.

It is a business with a £4.5 million turnover, employing 200 staff and run as a charitable trust. It is one of the largest hospices in the UK, serving a population of 184,000 in Rother and Hastings. Income is derived from contracts with health authorities, its shops and commercial business, donations and legacies. Fund-raising is a major focus of activity; the recent Phoenix Appeal has been supported throughout the communities it serves.

Future events planned include:

  • Fabulously Vintage Fair at Pashley Manor Gardens on Saturday September 17
  • 1066 Charity Walk on Sunday September 25
  • Open Gardens at Peasmarsh Place on Saturday October 15
