Memorial gifts help lifeboat

Everyone at Rye Harbour lifeboat station would like to say a big thank you to all the family and friends of Bob Young who kindly made donations to our lifeboat appeal.

Bob sadly passed away on July 15, aged 68, after being diagnosed with lung cancer only three months earlier. He did not wish to have too many flowers at his funeral and asked that donations be made to the new lifeboat appeal instead, as that would help to save lives in our area.

We were amazed as donations to our Just Giving page suddenly started to flood in and, together with other monies delivered to the station by Ruth, Bob’s widow, the total raised was £661.50.

Bob, originally from Belvedere in Kent, had been an engineer before retiring to Rye where he had always supported the local RNLI. He was an avid music fan and fly fisherman who will be sadly missed by all his family and friends.

The naming ceremony for the new lifeboat will be held at Rye Harbour on September 23 and everyone is welcome.

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. It costs £95,000 a year to operate an inshore lifeboat station like the one at Rye Harbour. People donate and raise money for us in all sorts of ways. If you would like to find out more visit our website at RNLI.org/support-us

  1. The RNLI does amazing work and the programme currently being shown on BBC2 Wednesday nights called “Saving Lives at Sea” (8pm) shows just how much danger the lifeboat crews have to face, literally risking their own lives to save others in appalling conditions. I am also a supporter and hope that this programme will bring in many more donations to help these brave volunteers to carry on their good work.

I didn’t know Bob Young but I’m sure he would have been delighted by the money raised in his memory.

  2. Many thanks for this article on my dear Dad. My Dad would have been thrilled to know he has helped with purchasing a new lifeboat; thank you for all your donations, family and friends. Big thank you to all the volunteers at the RNLI; such brave men and women. Praise also to my darling Mum; who has also been a very brave woman. God Bless you Dad. x

  3. Bob was an amazing man he was my cousin but we were like brothers. He and his wife Ruth were over with me in newtownards in northern ireland last year. Yes I am dearly going to miss bob

  4. Bob was my Uncle – a great amount of money raised in the memory of a great guy. Bob, Ruth and their daughters; Steff and Leah, have been inspiring and brave, which makes it even more fitting that they chose the RNLI – who are also inspiring and brave.x
