My mission this morning, Tuesday July 5, was to “go walkabout” in Rye with Nezar Boufrahi, a young man who has recently joined the Rye News team and who intends to follow a career in journalism. I wanted to prove to him that all it takes is a stroll around Rye before a story presents itself so we started at Landgate and headed along the High Street.
In the window of the Cook Shop was a poster for Rye Runners, advertising their next free training course. This in itself gave us an article to add to our sport section in Rye News (see separate story this week). We then stopped outside Boots to get an up-to-date, sunny landscape photo of the shop front as there is a story in the paper this week about the lack of a pharmacist there.
We then came across the former Holland and Barret shop, now closed but with a Let By board in the window. Who’s coming to Rye to take the premises? When are they opening? What will they be selling or offering? Another opportunity to investigate a new story.
We bumped into Martin Blincow of The Mermaid Inn and talked briefly to him about the newly installed electric vehicle charging points at the Mermaid which lead us to another photo opportunity and another positive story for this week’s edition.
At the base of Mermaid Street we bumped into Steve Lipross, senior assistant town steward of Rye Town Council who was busy painting the town red and gave us yet another great photo opportunity and another good news story which is now also in this week’s edition.
After all this excitement it was time for a coffee. The Apothecary beckoned and low and behold, another story emerged as we sat mulling over our morning’s brief tour of Rye.
Within an hour of meeting up, we had taken 8 sunny photos and had the basis for at least 5 interesting articles for Rye News. Nezar went away inspired but having lived his whole life in Camber, decided to write his first article about something more local to him which will appear in a future edition of Rye News.
