Rye Pirates and Smugglers Logo

A date for your diary. Rye Pirate and Smugglers Day will be taking place on Saturday, August 9. The day starts with a pirate and smugglers walk through the town starting from the Gun Gardens and finishing at the Strand Quay.

Zoe Britton is one of the event’s organiser looks ahead to what to expect. “Children’s entertainment, a family fun packed day, competition, treasure hunt, photo ops, historical walks and the town celebrating our wonderful heritage and history that is Pirates and Smugglers!”

There are more details on social media and there’s a meeting at the Mermaid Inn this weekend to find out more. It’s in the Tudor Room this Saturday, April 5 11am – 1pm.

Saving the hall

Camber Memorial Hall

As we reported last month, Camber Memorial Hall could close at the end of July because of a lack of volunteers. Now a meeting has been called next week to encourage people in Camber to get involved.

In March the trustees at the hall said they had had to make the difficult decision to close. “It has come to the point where there are only three or four active volunteers and they are over-stretched with the various aspects of running the hall. The current chair and the admin / bookings person are needing to step down after over four years of giving their time to the hall and with no-one, at this present time, able to take over these crucial roles, there is no option but to look at closing the hall.”

The meeting at the hall on Monday, April 7 at 7pm will discuss some of the roles which need filling – including gardening, admin, booking, social media, and website maintenance.

Allotments at South Undercliff

One more time

The last league game of the season sees Rye Rugby Club entertain Bromley this Saturday, April 5. Kick off at the rugby ground is at 3pm.

Rye will be hoping for better luck after their last game which saw the team lose  53-7 away to King’s College Hospital RFC on Saturday, March 22.

Partial solar eclipse

Thanks to Marie Richardson for these pics of the partial eclipse above the coast on Saturday March 29. In a rare natural event. the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth blocking some of the sun’s light. Filters are needed on cameras to capture the eclipse.

If you missed this one, there’s another in August next year. The next full solar eclipse in the UK is in 2090.

Did you fall for it?

Finally this week, hats off to the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway for this April fool story.

  1. I hope that the ‘Pirates and Smugglers’ day of children’s entertainment will include details of the real present day horrors caused by piracy.
