Police burglary warning, three times legal limit driving ban, Aldi consultation about to close, and RSA Summer Exhibition opens.
Burglaries
Sussex Police say there has been an increase in burglaries across the Rye area in recent weeks. They are advising people to “take the opportunity to ensure their properties are secure”.
Overnight on July 27 a property was broken into in Winchelsea Beach and a quad bike stolen. The bike is described as a bright orange CF Moto C Force. The police reference is CAD 285/28 July.
During the day on Monday July 22 there was a break in a property on New Winchelsea Road in Rye. Offenders threw a concrete block through the conservatory window sometime between 10am and 1.30 pm. Cash was stolen. Reference CAD 628/22 July.
On Saturday July 20 a substantial amount of cash and jewellery was taken from a house on Smeatons Lane in Winchelsea Beach. The theft occurred between 3pm and 10.45pm. Reference CAD/1418/20 July.
Three times the drink drive limit
A 47-year-old woman has been banned from driving for almost two years after a roadside breath test showed she was three times the legal limit for alcohol. She was stopped in Icklesham on Monday July 22 following a report to police indicating erratic driving and a potential case of driving while under the influence.
During a roadside breath test she registered a reading of 111, significantly exceeding the legal limit of 35 (micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath). As a result she was arrested under section 5 of the Road Traffic Act.
While in custody, she provided two additional breath samples recording levels of 122 and 113.
Hastings Magistrates issued a 23-month driving ban. She was also fined £1,000 with additional court costs of £85 and a surcharge of £400.
Camber death appeal
The family of a man who died at a Camber holiday resort are appealing against the Crown Prosecution Service decision not to bring charges in connection with his death.
Michael McDonagh died at the Parkdean resort in August 2022. In March this year Sussex Police confirmed that none of the seven people arrested on suspicion of his murder would be charged and the CPS concluding no further action would be taken. Sussex Police were called to the holiday camp following an altercation after a football match. The 53-year-old Londoner was pronounced dead at the scene. 150 witness statements were taken, and CCTV footage examined.
The family, from north London, have sent a Victims Right to Review of the case to the CPS after they were sent a letter by the body outlining the reasons for not pursuing the case. You can read the full story on BBC News.
One more week to have your say
The consultation into the new Aldi store on Winchelsea Road in Rye closes next week. Plans for the new store along with homes and retirement housing were officially submitted to Rother District Council in June after months of speculation.
Rye Town Council has said it supports the supermarket and homes proposals but only if the access arrangements are approved by National Highways. The council rejected the retirement housing plans.
The consultation closes on Friday August 9. You can view the proposals and comment here.
