Scams

A number of Rye businesses have reported counterfeit twenty pound notes in circulation.

Sussex Police say there are several ways to identify the fake notes including the silver crown on the front of the note displaying an iridescent shine and the monarch’s face in the left window should be sharp with clear text (counterfeit versions appear blurry).

On the back, the Margate Tower should have an iridescent appearance, the note should be free from fading or lines along fold marks, and in the right-side clear window, the monarch’s face should be transparent, not white as seen in counterfeits.

Filled in

Crater no more on Cinque Ports Street

The huge pothole at the bottom of Conduit Hill on Cinque Ports Street has been filled in, although concerns have been raised over the quality of the repair work. Contractors arrived on the scene during the evening on Friday, December 6.

Leader of East Sussex County Council Keith Glazier told Monday’s Rye Town Council meeting the county faced one of the biggest pothole backlogs in the country, with a potential cost of over £300 million to put right.

Gone

Going after at least two years on Strand Quay

The two Mackley portable offices finally left Strand Quay on Tuesday, December 10 at 11am. Tony Roi, who took this picture, says: “They have been a feature of the area for over two years. Returning the quay to the public is looking likely to happen very soon.”

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency told Rye News: “Further works to replace the boules court and landscape the area are also planned. The contractor is planning to complete all the works by the end of January.”

Closed

The A259 Fishmarket Road was closed for three hours after a crash on Thursday, December 5. Emergency services were called to to the scene after a collision between two cars and a van at around 7am.

Roadworks were already in place following the crash two days earlier at Skinners Roundabout which led to structural damage to a nearby building.

Christmas traditions

Christmas tree on the Strand

After the Christmas lights were put up around town by Rye mayor Andy Stuart and a team of volunteers at the end of November, there are two more Christmas traditions to report this week.

The Christmas tree on the Strand is up. Once again it has been provided by Rod Chapman and the team from Rastrum Wharf.

In the Buttermarket at Rye Town Hall, there’s another much loved Rye tradition on display. The Adoration of the Magi by John Ryan was first put on display in 1996 and features the traditional nativity with a hidden treat for fans of the local artist’s most famous creation – Captain Pugwash.

The artwork, which was restored by volunteers in 2021 also features the Ryan family’s dog Griff. Bournes Moves on Rye Harbour Road have been responsible for its installation and storage.

Martin Wimbush

Martin Wimbush

Martin’s funeral is taking place on Friday morning, December 13 at St Mary’s Church at 11am. As we reported last week the Christmas Cracker performances will still go ahead in tribute. It was to have been his third annual Christmas show with his musical team-mates and long-time partners Malcolm Newton and Sally Bayly, joined this year by Gregory Cox.

Sally hopes both this weekend’s shows sell out in tribute. “Let’s fill the community centre to the brim with love and light, in the knowledge that Martin will be watching with approval.”
