Here’s a roundup of some of the other stories making the news in Rye this week.
East Sussex confirms council tax increase
The money paid to the county council through the council tax is to increase by the maximum allowed – 4.99% – an increase of £84.51 next year for an average band D household. At a meeting on Tuesday, January 6, East Sussex County Council agreed to raise its share of the charge to £1,778.21 for band D households. The 2024/25 budget includes using £14 million from council reserves.
The full amount householders in Rye will have to pay will be finalised later in the month when Rother District Council signs off its increases. Rye News will have a full report on the East Sussex meeting in next week’s issue.
Planning meeting
There’s an extra meeting of Rye Town Council this Monday February 12, with the future of the Lower School site and the demolition of 23 Ferry Road in Rye being discussed. The meeting starts at 6:30pm alongside the Planning and Townscape Committee. You can read both agendas on the council’s website.
Almost time for the Scallop Festival
It’s just a week to go until the start of the annual Rye Bay Scallop Festival. It’s the twentieth year of the event which runs from Saturday, February 17 for a week at a number of venues in and around Rye. More details here.

Udimore Road closed next week
Finally, a reminder roadworks to repair the road through Udimore will mean the road will be shut for two days next week. The latest information says work is taking place on Monday and Tuesday, February 12 and 13, in several locations in the village each day between 8:30pm and 4pm.
