Here’s a roundup of some of the other stories making the news in Rye this week.
Allotment burglaries
A bad start to the new year for allotment holders on Love Lane in Rye after several sheds were burgled. The thefts happened overnight from Tuesday, January 2 into Wednesday, January 3 with a number of sheds damaged whilst offenders broke in.
Sussex Police are appealing for witnesses and for any shed owners who haven’t reported the damage to their property to get in touch. The police number is SXP-202240103-0868.
Winchelsea water problems
Homes in Winchelsea Beach were without water early on Tuesday morning, January 9 because of a burst water main near the junction of Sea Road and the A259. Southern Water say by early Tuesday afternoon 20 houses were still without water.
Cashless car parks
There are just a few days left to have a say on plans to make Rye’s council run car parks cashless. Rother District Council launched a consultation at the end of last year saying it hopes to stop using the parking machines to save £30,000 on the cash collection contract from this April. Many drivers already use an app to pay for parking, but for those who still want to use cash the council says local pay points will be available in nearby shops.
The consultation ends at midday on Wednesday January 17. More details here.
A259 roadworks
Night-time work to clear roadside verges between Winchelsea and Icklesham will mean delays from Monday, January 15 until Wednesday, January 17. Manually operated traffic lights will be in place between 8pm and 6am, with the road open as normal during the day. The work will take place between the junction of Monks Walk and Winchelsea Lodge.
