Rare bird spotted
An almost extinct visitor has arrived at the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve – a Red-backed Shrike.
The new arrival is a Red List bird says Laura Ross from the Reserve. “They feed on invertebrates or even small mammals, birds or reptiles, often impaling their prey on thorns or even barbed wire. These predatory habits have earned them several slightly sinister names including ‘butcher bird’, ‘destroying angel’, ‘worrier’ and ‘throttler’. They are almost extinct as a breeding species in the UK.”
James Tomlinson managed to find and photograph it. “I got a shout out yesterday from Tony Pierce, he had found a male Red-backed Shrike at the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. I managed to find the bird yesterday evening but it was very elusive! So after an early morning sortie at 5.30am this morning and a couple of hour’s stakeout, I did manage a a few record shots. What a handsome devil he is!”
