Ferry Road decision delayed – again

Rye News recently reported that the planning decision on the proposed development at the old school site on Ferry Road had not been decided as expected in April. The reason for this being Rother District Council initiating a viability study to ascertain if affordable housing was feasible on this site. The report concluded that it was. You can read Nick Forman’s coverage of that story here.

The latest planning register shows a decision on the application for 88 residential properties has been put back again. It is now due to be decided by August 31.

Meanwhile, there’s still no news on the proposal to develop the site on New Winchelsea Road which would include an Aldi supermarket. The eagerly awaited planning application is still conspicuous by its absence, at least as far as the public domain is concerned.

Rye News will keep checking.

Name needed

Rye Town Council’s planning meeting has an interesting item on the agenda this Monday – what to call a new street in Rye. A town house, five terraced houses and two Airbnb houses are being built off Tower Street behind Webbe’s Fish Restaurant. Tower Mews and Tower Street Mews have both been rejected as names as being too similar to the main street. Dean’s Rag Book Company – a well-known manufacturer of teddy bears and “rag books” – used to be on the site, before that it was Wright and Pankhurst, a removals and haulage firm.

Potential names will be discussed at the planning committee meeting at the town hall on Monday July 8 at 6.30pm. https://ryetowncouncil.gov.uk/category/agendas/

  1. Perhaps as some of us recall Dean’s factory in operation and the rag books being a widely available baby item, the new road name could reflect our local history – perhaps Dean’s Close, Rag Book Way, etc? They were probably the safest introduction to reading matter for young children.

  2. Re: New street name.

I remember playing in the yard at Wright and Pankhurst in the 1950s (my great aunt lived next door to the current Webbe’s). W & P is probably less well-known than Dean’s so how about Dean’s Close/Yard/Mews. I would tend to go for Yard, as that is what it was – Dean’s Yard in Westminster is very posh! Rye is not a “mews” sort of town.

  3. I would definitely agree with including Deans or Pugwash in the name. Also agree that it should be Yard, rather than Mews. So Deans Yard (not sure where the apostrophe goes!) or Pugwash Yard would get my vote.

  4. I plumped for Dean’s Close (or Yard) before reading the earlier comments. Apostrophe as shown. Seems to be the front runner at present.

  5. Rag Book Mews or Rag Book Yard would get my vote. Let’s add to Rye’s roster of quirky street names, and honor a bit of Rye’s history.

  6. I like the idea of Dean’s Yard – many people remember Deans with affection. My mother worked for them for many years, we’ve still got one of their ragbooks somewhere!

  7. Deans Yard would be good, as long as we don’t go down the Valley Park route and use one of the old chestnuts like they did up there, absolutely no imagination whats so ever.
We can only have so many Peacocke, Vidler, Jeake and Benson.
The main building has been Webbs fish restaurant for many years but is still known by many locals as Deans.

  8. What is an “AirBnB house”? A property even before it is ready for occupancy that has been determined to be for profit, for short-term rent? Rye is infested with AirBnB. We hardly need more. We need houses for people to live in full time.

  9. I recall that when houses were built in Jarrett’s Yard (which had always been called that) there were objections to the name Yard & it became Jarrettt’s Close. Let’s hope that we can now have a Yard in Rye!
