Here’s a roundup of some of the other stories making the news in Rye this week.

At a standstill

Roads closed in Rye during Wednesday’s incident

Rye town centre came to a halt for several hours on Wednesday June 5. A young man in a very distressed state was seen on the roof of The Pipemakers Arms public house from breakfast time, with local roads soon closed.

A cordon was in place blocking off Wish Street with traffic diverted, and an Incident Response Team from Sussex Police controlling access and monitoring the situation.

At the same time traffic came to a halt at the other side of town. A lorry blocked Landgate trying to negotiate the corner.

Camber assault

Western car park Camber

Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman was assaulted by another woman in a car park in Camber. The incident happened on Saturday, May 11, between 5.55pm and 6.10pm at the Western Car Park at Camber Sands.

A 19-year-old woman was assaulted and later attended hospital to be checked for her injuries.

Officers are investigating and appealing for witnesses or anyone with relevant information such as mobile phone footage of what happened to come forward. They are also urging members of the public not to post any footage online or on social media of the incident as it may impact on the investigation.

Anyone with information can report it to Sussex Police online, or by calling 101, and quoting serial 1071 of 11/05.

Pillbox vandalism

Vandalism at Rye Harbour

As the country marked the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, vandals have struck again at the World War Two pillbox at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. More spray paint was used this month, 6 months after the last attack.

Colonel Anthony Kimber, President of the Rye branch of the Royal British Legion, described the vandalism as mindless. “I take seriously our responsibilities for all aspects of Remembrance, including the maintenance of the many memorials and historic evidence of the numerous campaigns over the centuries which have impacted on the coast near Rye. My message to the culprits is that their actions only serve to discredit the many men and women who took part in the defence of UK and in particular to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Extra Council meeting

Rye Skatepark closed for repairs

As we reported in our update on the Rye public toilets, there’s an extra meeting of Rye Town Council this Monday June 10 at 6.30pm. As well as the toilets, the agenda also includes an update on the skatepark which is currently closed for repairs, and a discussion on additional admin support.

It is open to all, however the public and press are likely to be excluded for part of the meeting when the Council will discuss quotes and prices for work – including for the toilets.

You can read the agenda here.

Leases and licences

Rye Cricket Pavilion

Also on Monday June 10, there’s an important meeting to discuss how local sports clubs will need to do more because of council cutbacks at Rother District Council. The cabinet will meet during the evening to debate a report on the proposals in the new grounds maintenance contract which ends in November this year. It will mean significant changes for both Rye Cricket Club and Rye Bowls club.

The agenda, which also includes a discussion on vehicles and anti-social behaviour on local beaches, can be found here.
