Vandals

Gun Garden toilets next to Rye Castle

The public toilets in Rye’s Gun Garden are closing earlier each day until Easter because of what’s been described as “obscene and racist graffiti”.

The toilets were shut following the first incident last week to allow the graffiti to be painted over. A second incident a day later also required repair work.

The toilets will now close each day at 3pm until Easter. Since the early closure was put in place there have been no further incidents.

Surprising finds

Volunteers join Rye Chamber litter pick

A team of ten volunteers joined Rye Chamber of Commerce on a spring clean litter pick around Rye on Sunday, March 23. In pouring rain they collected 10 bags of rubbish – including a car bumper and a bra.

The initiative is part of Keep Britain Tidy’s annual Great British Spring Clean which continues on Saturday, April 5 at Camber.

Booking needed

A controversial online booking system for East Sussex rubbish tips will move ahead, after a committee agreed to take no further action on the proposals.

On Thursday, March 13 East Sussex County Council’s Place Scrutiny Committee considered a call-in request connected with proposals to introduce a booking system at the authority’s network of 10 Household Waste Recycling Sites (HWRS) – including Mountfield near Battle.

The plans have proven unpopular with more than 5,467 negative or extremely negative responses during a public consultation.

Road closed

Work on Rye Harbour Road

Work on Rye Harbour Road will mean overnight repairs next week. The work will be carried out from Thursday, April 3 to Saturday April 5 between 7pm and 6am each night.

The roadworks involve essential repairs to improve the condition of the carriageway, including tarmac repairs and surfacing at the junctions. A team from East Sussex Highways will be working from the gateway sign approximately 150 metres from the Rye Wharf Business Park to the turning area near the public toilets and nature reserve.

The road will be closed with access maintained for residents.

No fishing

The Environment Agency is reminding anglers that the close season for coarse fishing came in earlier in March and runs until June 15.

Throughout the close season, Environment Agency officers conduct patrols to ensure anglers respect the no fishing period. Notices have been displayed in key fishing areas  reminding anglers of the law.

Dave Webb, Environment Agency Fisheries team leader, said: “Between March and June, our coarse fish populations will soon begin spawning. The close season aims to protect fish during this delicate time to ensure they remain healthy and resilient. Each year we work closely with the Angling Trust and the Police to enforce the close season.”
