Here’s a round up of some of the other stories making the news in Rye this week.

More storm damage

As well as flooding, Storm Ciaran also caused problems on the coast last week. A large area of the shingle was washed away between Pett Level and Winchelsea Beach, revealing part of the old sea wall and a stretch of road.

The road, on the beach side of the current sea defences, is thought to have been last seen more than 40 years ago.

Rye Harbour Road repairs

Much needed roadworks are due to take place on the harbour road at the end of the month, with the road closed for a number of nights cutting off access to the village.

The 7pm to 7am closure will be in place from Monday, November 20 until Thursday, November 23. East Sussex Highways say anyone needing vehicle access should speak to the onsite team to discuss whether it will be possible, but to expect long delays.

Burglaries

A car was broken into on Pottingfield Road in Rye last week. It happened overnight on Tuesday, October 31. A wallet was stolen from inside the vehicle.

Earlier in the month, a purse and £20 was stolen from a house on Kings Avenue in Rye on Saturday, October 18. A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: “This incident occurred due to a door being left insecure for 15 minutes. We would like to remind residents to lock all doors and windows when leaving the house, even for a short time.”

The same day a business on Hilders Cliff in Rye was targeted, with food, alcohol and shoes stolen. A man was later arrested in Hastings in connection with the theft

Have your say on speeding motorbikes

Sussex Police have launched a survey to get residents’ views on noisy and speeding motorbikes. The online questionnaire is part of Operation Downsway, which Sussex Police describe as their response to “concerns raised by local communities relating to driving and riding behaviours, and to help reduce collisions involving motorcyclists”.

Another weekend of important events in Rye & Winchelsea

Rye Bonfire 2022

On Saturday, November 11 it’s Rye Bonfire. The bonfire and fireworks are an hour earlier this year, with Rye railway station closed after 3pm and the A259 shut between 6pm and 10pm. The procession of local bonfire societies starts from Mason Road in Rye at 7pm, parading through the town centre and finishing at The Salts. The chairing down of Rye Fawkes is at 7:40pm, the lighting of the bonfire at 8pm, with the fireworks a quarter of an hour later. For the latest timings, and any changes, visit www.ryebonfire.co.uk.

Earlier on Saturday it’s the Winchelsea Christmas Gift Fair from 10:30am – 3pm in the New Hall. We live in an area blessed with creativity and talent and the stalls will be full of artists and artisans selling their products. There is even a ‘food hall’, where you will find Charles Palmer sparkling wine, among many other local producers. The children of St Thomas’ Primary School will sing carols and you can enjoy tea and homemade cakes in the pop-up cafe.

The extraordinary grand raffle, first devised in 2020, has now become an annual feature. This year there are 22 fabulous prizes, generously donated by local businesses, ranging from a nature reserve tour, to meals out and cinema tickets. Money raised from this event is split between Rye Food Bank and other local charities. Christmas is one of the most expensive occasions in the year, but in these difficult times, it’s reassuring to know that you can help others, as you prepare for your own festivities.

And on Sunday November 12 it’s Remembrance Sunday. In Rye a parade of service, civil and youth organisations will start at Adams in the High Street at 10:40 am before marching to the town hall where the mayor of Rye will take the salute. At the Church of St Mary the Virgin there will be a service starting with a welcome at 10:55am.

The congregation should be seated in the church by 10:45am. After the service, there will be an act of remembrance and wreath laying at the war memorial.

  1. The Rye Food Bank is hugely appreciative of the support from the Winchelsea Gift Fair and from the many other groups, businesses and individuals who faithfully give. Every penny given and all food donated is used to make things easier and happier for those local people who struggle. Especially around Christmas, the time of goodwill but also the time of high energy costs and big bills.

  2. The item headed Burglaries; please tell me it’s not true that a spokesperson for Sussex police said “This incident occurred due to a door being left insecure for 15 minutes” .. an INSECURE door?

    • My thoughts exactly: as residents we have the right to expect our homes and properties to be safe. I accept that we aren’t (sadly) still in the days of being able to leave doors unlocked, so that friends and neighbours could nip in at any time, but the police have a duty to ensure that our community is being looked after. Before I get my head bitten off (!) I appreciate that we don’t have the police presence nowadays, but they should NOT blame residents for any crimes committed – this is due to the criminal/s.
