Here’s a round up of some of the other stories making the news in Rye this week.
Harbour roadworks postponed
The harbour road was going to be closed for several nights later this month, cutting off access to Rye Harbour village. That work has been cancelled for now.
East Sussex Highways says the reason the work has been delayed is that “larger scale work is required”. There’s no news about when the work will take place.
Stunning picture at Rye Harbour picture wins award
“Cormorant at Sunrise” taken by Tim Nightingale at Rye Harbour has won this year’s Sussex Wildlife Trust photography competition. The photo came out top from over 500 entries and an online vote.
Tim took the winning photo in April this year, just after 5am one morning. “I followed the path that runs parallel to the Rother, beyond the discovery centre, stopping briefly at the first hide. There wasn’t another soul in sight. As I got down nearer to the beach and the river’s estuary, the sun was just beginning to come up from behind the dunes on Camber Sands and then I spotted the cormorant on the pole. I had to move quickly to get in a position where it would be silhouetted. With the brightness of the sunrise and the darkness or low light in the scene generally, I used a tripod and shot it on a telephoto lens at about 300mm. The cormorant was very accommodating and stayed in situ allowing me to fire off a few different shots at different exposures.”
Have your say on budget plans
Rother District Council, which says it’s facing a £3.8 million shortfall in its budget next year, has opened up an online consultation on its financial plans. The local authority predicts it will have to change what it provides for residents over coming years, and isn’t ruling out stopping some of its discretionary services.
The council is proposing to raise council tax by 2.99%, and increasing fees and charges for the majority of council services by 6.8%. Council leader Doug Oliver says: “We do recognise that our residents are facing their own challenges as the cost-of-living crisis continues. Our task is to provide the services our residents want and to balance the books.”

Picture of the week
Wondering why the high street was closed last week? A van got stuck by the scaffolding at the top of Market Road, blocking the road whilst the emergency services came to the scene on Wednesday, November 8 at around 4pm.

I cannot get my head around the decision to delay the Harbour road repairs, why has it taken several years to decide that the road needs larger scale work is truly baffling!! It has been a discrace for more years that I can remember, have to feel for the residents of Rye Harbour.
Totally agree…. I’ve already had one cracked wheel. They need to get it repaired sooner than later.
