Wanted

Ben Barlow

Sussex Police are asking for help locating Ben Barlow who has links to Pett. The 32-year old is wanted in relation to breaching the terms of his domestic violence prevention order.

Barlow is around 5’10”, of slim build, has short dark blond hair and a short beard.

Anyone with information should call Sussex Police quoting reference 47240170231.

More road closures

A259 roadworks

There’s night-time resurfacing work on the main road through Rye starting on Monday October 14. Repairs will take place the between Kettle of Fish and Skinner’s roundabouts on the A259 until Saturday November 9.

Work will be carried out in three phases overnight between 8pm to 6am. The road will be closed with lengthy diversions.

  • Kettle of Fish roundabout to Shipyard Lane from Monday October 14 to Friday October 18.
  • Shipyard Lane to Skinners roundabout from Monday October 21 to Friday November 1.
  • Skinners Lane to Kings Avenue from Monday November 4 to Friday November 8.

Taxi changes

Rye taxi rank

CCTV cameras are likely to become mandatory in all taxis and licenced private hire vehicles in Rye after changes discussed by Rother District Council’s licencing committee on Monday September 23. It agreed to recommend changes to the council’s taxi policy to the next meeting of the full council.

As well as CCTV the new policy also includes: mandatory training in customer care; disability awareness and safeguarding; permitting wheelchair accessible, electric and some hybrid vehicles to be licensed for 15 years from first registration; and only requiring annual vehicle compliance tests for vehicles less than 10 years old.

Yes it’s been a bit wet

Met Office rain fall for September

Confirmation from the Met Office just how wet September has been. Rye had twice as much rain last month as the average rainfall for September. Other parts of Southern England have had three times the average.

Bonfire season starts

The 2024 Sussex Bonfire season begins this weekend with Northiam’s procession and fireworks on Saturday October 5. Rye’s bonfire night is on Saturday November 9. More details about this year’s event here.

Oyez! Oyez! Oyez!

Be it known that the 71st national town criers’ championship will be held on Saturday October 12 2024 at the Gun Gardens, Rye.

Admission is Free.

Join Rye’s town criers, Paul Goring and Arabella Ansar, as they host, for only the second year, the 71st national town criers’ championship in its new location of Rye.

Town criers from around the country take part in this spectacular event. Judging will be based on volume, diction, clarity and inflection. Round one takes place from 11:30am – 1pm, hearing a “home cry” from each participant. The competition continues in the afternoon, from 2pm – 3:30pm, with a themed cry; after which the results will be announced.

In the event of poor weather, the event will take place in nearby St Mary’s Church.
