“I was an NHS baby” – Nigel Jennings

Members of Hastings and Rye Constituency Labour Party celebrated the 70th birthday of the National Health Service in Rye High Street on Saturday, July 7.
Rye Branch members were joined by Rye Councillor Cheryl Creaser, Chair of Hastings and Rye CLP and Councillor Peter Chowney, Leader of Hastings Borough Council and prospective parliamentary candidate for Hastings and Rye.
The NHS was launched on July 5, 1948, and “NHS babies” were invited to have their photos taken in traditional British seaside style and encouraged to share them with their friends on Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and Instagram.
The infant in the 1940s perambulator was an idea conceived by Judy Greenwell and delivered by Dominic Manning.
There was an enthusiastic response from 1pm until about 2:30pm whereupon the streets cleared, tumbleweed rolled about and all went to watch the football.
