On Thursday August 1, RNLI volunteers across the country at 238 lifeboat stations and fundraising venues, participated in a special photo moment – One Moment for One Crew – to create a photographic record of those involved with the lifesaving charity in this, its two-hundredth anniversary year. The charity, which was founded in 1824, asked its volunteers and staff from around the UK and Ireland to take a photo of themselves, their crew or their team, at as close as possible to 18:24 on 1.8.24.
One Moment for One Crew is very much about both celebrating the people of today’s RNLI and, it is hoped, inspiring those future generations who will take the RNLI into its third century of lifesaving. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its volunteer crews and lifeguards have saved over 146,000 lives – this equates to an average of two lives saved every day for 200 years.
RNLI Rye Harbour’s crew, fundraisers, and their supporters took part in this one moment and were thrilled to welcome Janet Legrand OBE, who is RNLI chair, who said: “It was very special to join Rye Harbour RNLI for this special moment as the RNLI’s ‘One Crew’ from all our lifeboat stations, lifeguard beaches, fundraising branches, shops, museums and visitor centres across the UK and Ireland came together to capture this moment in time at 18:24 on 1.8.24.
“I look forward to seeing the mural of all these photos which is being created to commemorate the RNLI’s 200th anniversary year.”
Cllr Andy Stuart, mayor of Rye, also to joined in the celebrations.
Earlier in the day, the station’s chairman, Martin Bruce, took part in RNLI Hastings’ Big Lifeboat Concert celebrating the 200 years. Martin led his shanty group, Rye Harbour Herrings, as they kicked off the celebrations by singing the specially-commissioned shanty written by Martin. Congratulations to RNLI Hastings on a spectacular concert which was well supported by the town.
