Rye is sadly not immune to serious crime and last Sunday the emergency services attended an incident in the town centre, their sirens alerting all that something was amiss. A serious assault had taken place and this is the press release from Rother Police (Sunday May 15) regarding the incident outside the Queen’s Head pub in Rye.
“We responded to a report of a man with a knife who had injured two people outside the Queen’s Head hotel in Rye in the early hours of Saturday 14 May. The two victims were taken to hospital for treatment and are being supported by officers. Their injuries were not life threatening. A man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and remains in custody.
We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. If anyone witnessed the incident or has any information which could help our investigation please report online or ring 101 quoting serial 24 of 14/05.”

But why make such of a thing of this being OUTSIDE the Queens Head? Why not simply report it as being a incident in the Landgate? The immediate impression the article gives is that this incident was something to do with the pub which is very unfair. The Police report does not make this assertion and although the official report named the pub, there is no need for Rye News to have quoted verbatim
I suspect Rye News have made such a thing about this being outside the Queen’s Head is because the incident and the pub are connected. The police sealed off the whole area. I was on the Landgate when the police and ambulance arrived. Either the attacker or victims, or both, had been at the pub. And though I don’t know if it’s connected, the Queen’s Head also have some newly broken windows.
Why on earth wouldn’t Rye News quote a press release verbatim? Rother Police said it happened outside the Queen’s Head, Rye News didn’t make it up did they ? Now why they chose to publish under that ridiculous headline, that’s a different matter ! How dare the police shatter the peace when responding to an incident – as the Chief Inspector says – Rye is a very safe place “ no drug problem here etc.”
