In the early hours of Tuesday April 26, a man broke a number of windows and attempted to break into La Maison du Vin in Conduit Hill. It happened just after 2am and the person was captured on CCTV at the wine bar. He had a grey hoodie which obscured his face and he left the scene with a bottle of champagne which he managed to pull through one of the broken windows.
The attempted break in was spotted by Nicky Ledger, the Rye Town Steward, as he was on his way to work. He set up a temporary barrier to protect passers-by from the glass on the road.
Later in the day it was realised that the same person had broken into the Globe Inn in Military Road about an hour later. Again some alcohol was stolen. The police are looking at other CCTV cameras to see if there are more sightings that will identify him.
