This Sunday, September 9, is the annual Rye Festival of the Sea.
It starts at 11:15am with the raft race around the fishing quay by the Monkbretton bridge across the River Rother on the Kent side of Rye where the teams will be battling each other in their home made rafts, as well as avoiding the flour and water bombs from the spectators lining the river bank.
A word of warning to the spectators though, the participants tend to reply in kind.
After the race the competitors (and spectators) get to parade through the town to the Strand where at 1pm the winners will be presented with their trophies.
The tug of war event, sponsored by Rye News, takes place at 3:30pm outside the Old Borough Arms.
There will be stalls and entertainment along the Strand from 1pm to 5pm and an afternoon of great music is lined up. For younger participants there is a sea-themed fancy dress competition, and readings by the Town Crier of Captain Pugwash stories in the Rye Heritage Centre.
