Members of St Mary’s knitting group delivered another 50 blankets plus children’s winter-knits to the Worthing depot for Samara’s Aid Appeal on Friday January 20 and these will go on their way to refugee camps in Iraq, Syria and beyond in the coming days.
The charity has also devised a “Meditainer” scheme, whereby the containers, on arrival, are converted into little medical units, so forthcoming appeals will be encouraging donations of first-aid materials, care-packs for new mothers and babies, etc.
Janet Waddams, our local co-ordinator, is hoping to organise another collection in early March and should be contacted by phone (01797 214089) about offers of donations or help. In the meantime, the knitters are continuing with the blankets but also focusing on hand-knits for older children (particularly boys) and patterns for these are available at St Mary’s. Again many thanks to everyone who has knitted, sewn up, or donated wool and also given cash towards the cost of the wool. One of the newest members of the group (pictured here) is Judith Gibson who has knitted several pairs of slippers, plus the largest blanket to date – 110 squares! Well done Judith!
