Ringing out for ringer

Rye bellringers celebrated the centenary of the death of Lance Corporal William Bennet on October 12 1917 by ringing a well-struck 240 of Plain Bob Doubles on Thursday October 12 at St Mary’s church.

William Bennet was born in Rye on November 29 1887, was living at Mint Chambers and working as a grocer’s assistant before he enlisted in the Sussex Regiment at Hastings, aged 20 in 1917. He married earlier that same year Ann Britt of 4 Wish Ward. He was a Rye bellringer so it was fitting that this quarter peal was rung to commemorate his sacrifice.
