Our congratulations to Ronnie Simmons, who has just been awarded a BEM (British Empire Medal) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, “for services to the community in Rye East Sussex”.
Ronnie Simmons’ great contribution was in realising his dream to convert the dangerously run-down fish quay into a modern state-of-the-art facility, claimed to be one of the best in the country. This was achieved with the help of the Environment Agency and the active support of the then MP Michael Foster.
East Sussex County Councillor Keith Glazier writes:
“It is great to see the dedication that Ronnie has shown to fishing and the fishermen of Rye has been recognised by being awarded BEM in the Queen’s birthday honours, Ronnie’s efforts in helping to secure the funds to rebuild the fish quay has made such a difference.”
The new fish quay in Rock Channel, named and known as Simmons Quay, was opened in 2006.

  1. Congratulations to my friend Ronnie Simmons. This honour has been awarded to a great gentleman, who has worked tirelessly for Rye Fisherman for 40 plus years. Well done Ronnie. Ernest Vicarey.
