Security heightened

Following the Manchester terrorist attack on a family event, security levels across the country have been raised to “critical” but there should be no visible army presence in East Sussex, say the police. However, BBC News says there may be soldiers guarding Kent’s nuclear power station at nearby Dungeness to free up police for other duties.

But there may be more police presence at key sites such as railway stations and town centres.

Rother District Council (RDC) have been in contact with event organisers and venue managers telling them to be extra vigilant and, if any events could involve over 500 people, they should inform the police and take consideration of the Counter Terrorism Protective Security Advice.

If the current hot weather continues (and it may not beyond Saturday, says the Met Office weather forecast) 25,000 people, mainly families, could visit Camber Sands on a day trip from Greater London and surrounding counties on Saturday, but such unpredictable and unplanned events may not be covered by the Security Advice.

However, the new lifeguards are expected to be in place at Camber this weekend. The inquest into last year’s drownings will be held next month, June.
