Sluice gets upgrade

At the confluence of three rivers, Rye is surrounded by water and key to the flood defence system are the sluices, which enable the Environment Agency to control the flow of water from the rivers into the tidal water and vice versa. The Tillingham sluice has sat at the north end of the Strand in some form or other since 1786, and is undergoing yet another major planned refurbishment.

ECS, the Environment Agency’s contractors, just down from work in the north of Scotland, are fitting new access and control facilities to the sluice gate. This has involved some major engineering and new steelwork. Some of the larger sections had to be lifted into position by crane. The work is taking around three weeks but, once complete, the sluice will be ready for years more of vital service, to keep the flood waters at bay.
