Last Saturday, in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera, Rye 1st XI ran out convincing 5 wicket victors over Bexhill. Bexhill were inserted by skipper Harry Smeed. Bexhill got off to a steady start at 57-2 but overseas Chanuka Dilshan 1-19 off 9 overs tightened the screw, to allow Steve Stickells 2-31, Harry Smeed 2-34 to chip away at the middle order, as Bexhill crawled to 183-8 in 45 overs. That was only achieved by an 8th wicket partnership of 55 between Benjii Hammond 25 and Bryon Smith 26 no.
In reply, Rye stuttered at 27-2, and 64-4, but a composed knock of 31 not out by Fred Smith, 32 from Harry Smeed and Luke Payton with a brutal 51 not out off 26 balls including 3 large sixes. This leaves Rye in third place. This Saturday they travel to league leaders St Peters.
The 2nds with a weakened team travelled to Little Common Ramblers. Asked to bat first they scored 199 all out in 38 overs. It was a below par score as batsmen failed to capitalise on starts. Ben Clifton 24 , Spencer Fielding 33, Blake Rouse 39 and Will Wheeler 41. In reply Little Common eased home by 4 wickets, which failed to tell the story of a lacklustre fielding display as Jonne Tryphonos top scored with 72, but Rye defaulted on 5 chances to dismiss him. It took 36 overs and Rye were left ruing missed opportunities with bat and ball. This Saturday Rye 2nds host Iden 1sts at The Salts in a match sponsored by The Mermaid Inn.
The 3rds continued their good start to the season as they sealed a 5 wicket victory over Herstmonceux 3rds. The ‘Ceux batted first and were dismissed for 79 in 21.3 overs. Anthony Bradnum 6-27 and Colin O’Neill 3-8 made short work of the innings. Thanks to Grahame Burton 23 no and Digby Llovet-Dinning Rye went past the victory post in the 23rd over. The 3rds sit 3rd in their league and this Saturday travel to play Robertsbridge 4ths.
