Rye 1sts got their season off to a flyer with a 214 run winning margin over Buxted Park. Rye made a steady start but wobbled on 78-4. At this point Skipper Harry Smeed was joined by Luke Payton. They put Buxted to the sword sharing a 195 run partnership. Smeed hit 86 off 87 balls whilst Payton hit 99 off just 65 balls. Luke just fell short of a hundred, but Rye finished on 273-7. Redding Barnes with 5-46 the pick of the Buxted bowlers.

Struggling in the drizzle

Buxted Park never got their reply going. Opening pair Craig Pierce 3-27 and Carl Mumba 2-22 reduced Buxted to 26-5. Then James Smeed mopped up the tail with 5-8 off 3.1 overs, supported by great catches. Buxted Park were dismissed for 59 in just 14.1 overs.

Rye 2nds lost at Seaford in another high scoring game. Rye failed to make the most of opportunities. Seaford were 0-2 in the first over as Aussie Kyle Scott made an impression in his first over for the club. Seaford recovered and wobbled at 85-5. Tim Page with 69 off 59 balls put Seaford ahead of the game.

Martin Blincow with 2-21 off 8 overs put a brake on and although Kyle Scott took 5-54 and Callum Haddaway 2-48, the last pair added 49 valuable runs. 10 no balls were punished as Rye struggled in the drizzle.

Rye made a slow response at 11-2, but Will Wheeler and Kyle Scott put Rye on track. Although Scott fell for 31 Rye had momentum as Will Wheeler hit 99, only to be run out in the chase, as Rye slumped from 183-4 to 201-9, nevertheless garnering 13 valuable points.

Helping the hospice

Rye Thirds played a friendly against Icklesham, with Icklesham winning by 40 runs. A good first run out in adult cricket for a young Rye side, and £1,100 was raised by the afternoon going to St Michael’s Hospice. Many thanks to those who organised the very successful afternoon.

Next Saturday, Rye Firsts travel to Seaford, the 2nds host Newhaven 1sts in a match sponsored by the Mermaid Inn, and the 3rds play away to Pevensey 3rds.

This Friday, Rye’s softball season starts, All Stars 6pm-7pm for 7-9 year olds and 7pm-8pm for Cricket Dynamos for 10-12 year olds. To join in contact Martin Blincow at blincsfamily@aol.com.
