Last Saturday Rye 1sts entertained Cuckfield 2nds in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera. Rye won the toss and elected to bat. Rye struggled early on against accurate bowling as they slipped to 25-3. Luke Payton and Dylan Harrison-Smith rebuilt the innings as Smith was dismissed for 39 as they shared a 75 run partnership. The remainder of the innings then was built around Luke Payton’s knock of 94, which included 10 4s and 4 6s. With support from the tail, Luke took the score to 207-9 before Craig Pierce 19 not out and James Smeed 9 not out took the total to 238-9 off 45 overs.

In reply Cuckfield struggled against the new ball. Craig Pierce and Shohel Ahmed with 2 wickets apiece, supported by Harrison-Smith reduced Cuckfield to 90-6. Cuckfield made a spirited resistance as Ben Wilsdon hit 88, and 9 4s and 2 6s, to keep a level of interest. Skipper Harry Smeed with 2-19 ensured Cuckfield were dismissed for 183 in the 43rd over.

That makes it 3 wins in a row. This Saturday Rye travel to Glynde 1sts, in a tricky match.

Rye 2nds on Saturday faced Willingdon 1sts and discovered in their ranks a player who had represented England U17s and Sussex 2nd Xl. Tom Gordon proved his pedigree hitting 186 not out in 40 overs. He faced 112 balls, hit 19 4s and 11 6s. It was a hard hitting knock, punishing all the bowlers, only Martin Blincow 1-38 off 8 overs exerted any control. Willingdon racked up 298-5 off 40 overs.

With the game already dead, Rye batted their 40 overs to reach 1135-8 off 40 overs. Richard Mathews with 45 top scored. This week Rye 2nds host Glynde 2nds in a match sponsored by The Mermaid Inn.

The 3rd Xl were hit by 2 late injury withdrawls, and the absence of a number of senior players, so travelled to play Herstmonceux 3s with 9 players. The young side struggled to score 82 All Out. Ed Prentice with 16 the only player to reach double figures. Hetsmonceux 3s passed the total without loss. The two sides are re-matched this Saturday at Icklesham.
