At least the water is warm

After two years of working around Covid restrictions it is pleasing to report that so far this year Rye Harbour Sailing Club’s dinghy section has managed to deliver a full racing programme.

Anna Knight deals with a tricky gust of wind.

Series 1 finished on July 17 with nine events raced and a very few cancelled because of bad weather. In fact, so benign has the weather been that only three races have had to be held on the River Rother rather in Rye Bay; one competitor, after capsizing, was heard to say that “at least the water is warm”. The final results for Series 1, for which the Admiral Anstruther Cup is awarded, were:

1st – Mark Whiteman
2nd – Steve Eccles
3rd – John & Claire Powell

Before Series 1 had finished the club delivered the RYA’s annual open event ‘Discover Sailing’ which encourages members of the public to visit a local club and have a go at sailing. Over a weekend in early July, twenty-one visited and several have now become members.

In addition to racing, members regularly go out for a cruise either by themselves or during a Friday evening organised event which is particularly good for those with young families who just want to ‘muck about’ on the water (when the tide is right – there is one this Friday, August 5 which is followed by a presentation by the Border Agency and a barbecue).

Series 2 started on July 31 and will end in late November after ten races with the annual Pirate Race in September (September 19 is international ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day’). For those wishing to know more about the club and its activities everything you need to know can be found on the RHSC Website; membership enquiries can be sent to RHSCMembership@gmail.com and visitors are welcome any time the club is open.
